I knew this was going to happen

beetle

i knew that as soon as i took up drawing again, i would get really enthusiastic about it for a short amount of time. and then life would catch up with me, and progress would slow down immensely. and that's where i find myself these days.

beetle

i sat down on sunday (when i was snowed in) and decided to get down to business. i did this painting of a beetle, and then decided to see what it would look like inked. the end result? i simply find that my work frustrates me more than it gratifies me sometimes. it doesn't look bad per se... it's just frustrating to not be able to see where i want to take this and how to get better when a destination isn't in sight.

bah humbug.

  1. While I can certainly relate to being more frustrated than gratified with creative projects, I think this looks superb, Jes. Even if your journey is blind, I think you should consider this drawing an exciting step.

  2. That's the funny thing... drawings never turn out how you imagine. But that doesn't mean they look bad.

    This looks really good!

  3. thanks you two! i have to say that such positive feedback from folks whose opinions i respect goes a long way for me. i cannot wait to get down to doing more drawing and eventually getting a greater sense of my style and where i want to stretch it. i just have to get the energy up to deal with the initial frustrations.

  4. This is a wonderful drawing, Jes. I understand the frustrations involved, but sometimes if you walk away from something you are less- than- satisfied with, when you come back to it, you get a pleasant surprise. It looks great!

  5. i love the colors you have going on, that is the hard thing about using ink, you never know what its gonna do to your colors...hard to balance, but i still think it looks great, espeically that blue green shadow!
